About the Book
Polan, Katz and Co. (PK) was a Baltimore umbrella manufacturer with branch plants in Brunswick MD and Lancaster PA. In the mere eight years from PK's founding in 1906 to the beginning of World War I in 1914, PK grew to be one of the largest umbrella manufacturers in the United States. Unfortunately, the company had to close in 1981 because it could not compete with the prices of cheap imported umbrellas. The book tells the history of PK using information provided by Lawrence R. Katz, president of the company from 1950 – 1981. Photos of PK umbrellas and PK’s umbrella manufacturing process are included.
